Financial Aid
Prospective Students
Application Instructions
The College Scholarship Service (CSS) Financial Aid PROFILE and the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) are required to apply for institutional grant aid and federal financial assistance. Follow the steps below to apply for financial aid at St. John's College. It is important to observe the deadlines. See the financial aid timeline for guidance and deadlines for applying to the college and applying for financial aid.
According to new federal guidelines, all students who wish to receive Title IV aid must now have a high school diploma or a recognized equivalent (e.g.,GED), or meet the home school requirements. Please contact the Financial Aid office if you have questions about your eligibility.
Note that to be considered for merit aid, no separate application is necessary.
Step 1 – Complete CSS Profile
Complete and submit the CSS PROFILE Application online at profileonline.collegeboard.com. The CSS code for Annapolis is 5598 and Santa Fe is 4737. We recommend that you submit the PROFILE between October 1 and February 15.
If parents are divorced or separated, the non-custodial parent must complete the CSS Non-Custodial Parent (NCP) Statement. The NCP Statement can be done on-line at ncprofile.collegeboard.com.
Step 2 – Complete FAFSA
File a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) between January 1 and February 15. The federal code for Annapolis is 002092 and Santa Fe is 002093. You should file the FAFSA electronically at www.fafsa.ed.gov. If this is your first time completing a FAFSA, you will need to apply for a PIN number for both the student and parent at www.pin.ed.gov. The pin number will serve as your electronic signature. Do not wait until you have completed your 2012 tax returns to submit the FAFSA; use your best estimates and update the information after your taxes are completed. To avoid processing delays be sure both the student and parent sign the application using the assigned pin number.
Step 3 – Give supporting documentation to the Financial Aid Office
Once the Financial Aid Office has received both your CSS Profile and FAFSA, we will notify you of any supporting documentation we need. Examples of the additional information we may need are copies of parents' and student's 2012 federal income tax return or transcript (transcript must be requested from the IRS), W-2 forms, partnership and corporate returns are when applicable. In the case of divorced or separated parents, we may need the non-custodial parents’ federal tax return and W-2. To send these documents, you can e-mail, fax, or send by mail to the Financial Aid Office.
Step 4 – Maryland State Grants
Maryland Residents: File the FAFSA and state application before March 1 to be considered for programs offered by the Maryland Higher Education Commission. State scholarships are an important resource for Maryland residents. See www.mhec.state.md.us for more information. Residents from the states of NM, PA, RI and VT should file the FAFSA by March 1st in order to be considered for a state sponsored grant.
Special Notes
Policy Regarding the Integrity of Information: If the Financial Aid Committee has strong reason to believe that a family has intentionally misrepresented its circumstances in order to qualify for financial aid, the student may be permanently barred from receiving institutional funding.
Independent Students: Applicants for institutional aid must submit parental information on the Profile, even though they may meet the conditions for federal independency. Independent students may apply for federal and state financial aid without submitting parental data.
